Sierra X31 Package

X31 Off-road package

X31 Package

For the GMC Sierra, there is a new badge to be seen. Until 2018, the GMC Sierra, like the Chevrolet Silverado, would sport the Z71 badging to indicate the off-road package. When the redesign came in 2019, the Sierra's new looks called for some new verbiage and badging. Unlike the Z71 badge seen on the front grille and beside the sideview mirrors in a Silverado, the X31 package is similar to the F-150's FX4 badge in that it sits at the back quarter of the pickup bed. Instead of lamenting over packages lost, let’s take a look at what we gained.

Sierra 1500

X31 Off-Road Package: What’s included

  • Off-road suspension
  • Hill descent control
  • Skid plates
  • Heavy-duty air filter
  • X31 hard badge

What trims are available?

The X31 package is not available across the entire lineup. Both the Denali and AT4 trims don’t get these add-ons, but it is still available on the following trims:

  • Base (1SA)
  • SLE (3SA)
  • Elevation (3SB)
  • SLT (4SA)

What are the requirements?

Just like any truck package, there are a few conditions and prerequisites when building out your dream truck. For instance, because this is an off-road package, you can only order it as a 4WD model. Here are the other requirements:

  • Base: must be Crew Cab or Double Cab, have a trailering package and All-terrain tires.
  • SLE: Must have All-terrain tires. Can not be ordered with the 2.7L Turbo engine, max trailering package, or the 22” wheels.
  • Elevation: Must have All-terrain tires. Can not be ordered with the 2.7L Turbo engine, Max Trailering Package, or the 22” wheels.
  • SLT: Must have All-terrain tires. Can not be ordered with the Max Trailering Package, or 22” wheels.

Trim-specific Add-ons

While the basic “what’s included” is included on all four trim levels, each trim has a couple of extra add-ons that you can select. For instance:

  • Base: includes auto-locking rear differential and 2-speed transfer case.
  • SLE: Dual Exhaust, 18” 6-spoke machined aluminium wheels with Dark Grey Metallic accents and 265/65R18SL All-terrain, blackwall tires, plus a 2-speed Auto-Trac transfer case. The wheels can be upgraded to 265/65R18SL All-terrain white outlined letter tires or 20” polished alumium wheels with 275/60R20SL All-terrain blackwall tires.
  • Elevation: includes dual exhaust, 275/60R20SL all-terrain, blackwall tires and a 2-speed transfer case.
  • SLT: Includes a 2-speed transfer case, dual exhaust, and 265/65R18SL all-terrain, blackwall tires. The wheels can be upgraded to 20” polished aluminum wheels with 275/60R20SL all-terrain, blackwall tires.

While the Denali and At4 trims don’t have access to this package, some of the standard features of the package, such as hill descent control, are standard on these trims.

Sierra 2500HD and Sierra 3500HD

The Sierra 2500HD is slightly different from the 1500 in that there is an option to get the X31 Off-road package at every trim level. There is one less trim, however, with the Sierra 2500HD only being offered as a Base (1SA), SLE (3SA), SLT (4SA), AT4 (4SB) and Denali (5SA).

For the Base, SLE, and SLT trims, just as with the Sierra 1500, there are a couple of different nuances to the package. At each level, the package includes:

  • Hill descent control
  • Skid plates
  • Off-road suspension
  • Twin-tube Rancho shocks
  • X31 hard badge.

In order to be ordered with the X31 package, each trim must be a 4WD model and have All-terrain tires. Additionally, the package can not be ordered with dual rear wheels or pickup bed delete. Both the Sierra 2500HD Base model and SLE trim get an additional add-on of  LT265/70R17E All-terrain blackwall tires.

The AT4 and Denali trims can also be ordered with a version of the X31 package. In this case, it isn’t an added package but just included with the trims. This variant includes:

  • Hill descent control
  • Skid plates
  • Off-road suspension
  • Twin-tube Rancho shocks.
